I Spent 40 Minutes to Learn Real-Life Marketing Lessons
Tasty Lessons.
I was waiting 40 minutes for Tonkatsu at a brand new restaurant in my small city.
Tonkatsu is a golden, crispy fried pork dish.
While waiting, I noticed that all the customers took leftovers home.
When I saw my Tonkatsu, I understood why — it’s too big for most people to finish.
My wife then asked,
“Why don’t they shrink the size of the meal so everyone can finish?”
I tried to put myself in the owner’s shoes and now I understand why they sell such a large portion
even though they know the customer can’t finish it.
Here are my two conclusions:
Value
I tried to imagine customer reviews:
- Normal size: “The Tonkatsu is tasty and crispy.”
- Large size: “The Tonkatsu is tasty and crispy, but bro, you know what? I can’t finish that damn Tonkatsu myself, it’s too big.”
Serving a large portion of Tonkatsu can create a great reputation in customers’ minds, making the restaurant seem like a good value because almost everyone can’t finish the meal.
