Fake Gurus

They tell you what to do. Act like they know it all.

Here’s the real deal:

The most useful advice that gets people to read comes from guides, not gurus.

So forget about fake gurus.

It’s impossible to get readers that way.

I learned this from Donald Miller’s book, Building a StoryBrand.

3 Reasons pretending to be a Fake Guru hurts you

  1. It causes imposter syndrome and burnout.
  2. No one believes what you’re saying.
  3. It destroys your credibility.

I get why people pretend to be experts — they think it’ll help them get noticed.

That’s not true.

Instead, being a fake guru breaks you more than it makes you.

Are You Taylor Swift?

No. You’re just a nobody.

That’s why no one wants to read your advice.
