The Purple Alien Teaches Me About Writing
I spent 1 hour and 34 minutes learning.
This is “Home.”
a kid animation from DreamWorks about a cowardly purple alien named “Oh”
Here are some thoughts:
1.) No one cares about your grammar.
English teachers must be annoyed if they are watching Oh speak.
“Thanking you”
“I haves this”
“Finding Mimom”
They’re all grammatically incorrect, but the duty of language in communication isn’t to be 100% correct but to convey emotions.
And do you know how amazing our brains are?
I’ll show you:
“Hungyr I am”
I know you understand what I’m writing now.
2.) All good story needs this.
“Home” is a story for kids, but I watched it until the end.
Do I have kids? — No.
Am I a kid? — No.
But the storytelling techniques that made me sit and watch until the end.
The creators throw conflicts at the audience throughout the story, but I won’t spoil it.
Hahah.
You can spot the pattern in every series or movie you like.
- If the main character’s life is happy, they throw them into conflict.
- They slowly reveal hints.
- They plant curiosity in your mind.
- You can’t predict what will happen next.
That’s why you keep watching and watching.
